We are approaching that time of year when households throughout the country will embark on their annual spring cleaning mission. Hours and days will be spent scrubbing, cleaning and decluttering the house, from the skirting boards to the ceilings, plug sockets to light fittings and everything and everywhere between. This can mean using a lot of chemicals being used throughout the house. But that doesn’t need to be the case. If you would prefer to use cleaning products that are chemical-free and more environmentally friendly, especially in the kitchen where you cook and prepare your food, then take a look at Ecover. Ecover have a wide range of vegan-friendly, plant-based cleaning products for around the home. I have been trying out their Oven & Hob Cleaner to keep my cooker clean without spraying it with harsh chemicals.
Most of us will use our cookers every day, we need to eat after all. But cooking food can be messy with spills and splatters making the oven and hob dirty with grease and burnt-on food. This means constant cleaning, unless you like your cooker hob looking like a smorgasbord of the week’s dinner. So, when it comes to cleaning, we want something that does the job well.
Welcome to Ecover’s Oven & Hob Cleaner, it has no harsh chemicals that you would associate with this type of cleaning product. It is Vegan friendly, made from plant-based, biodegradable ingredients. Even the bottle is manufactured from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic with the trigger from made of 30% post-consumer recycled plastic. The bottle is widely recycled and uses less plastic and features smaller labels that peel off easier during the recycling process. And their products are all made in a Platinum-certified zero-waste factory (you can read more about that here). With no chemicals, I was very dubious to how clean it would get my oven and hob but had to try it!
The oven & hob cleaner comes in a 500ml spray bottle and has a really great smell (Jasmine & Mandarin). Using it is easy, the same way as with most cleaners you would use. Just spray onto surfaces and leave it to work for one minute (longer for more stubborn stains and burnt-on food). Wipe away with a wet cloth or sponge before rinsing off with water. For best result, dry with a dry cloth and do not use on hot surfaces. If you listen closely, you can hear it fizzing away! But does it work? Can the power of plants really clean stubborn burnt on food?
The simple and direct answer is a resounding YES! After an initial one minute spray and soak, my hob was almost spotless, and with very little effort. The tougher grease and food came off with a minimal amount of effort. All that was left behind was a clean and sparkly spotless hob with a fresh orangey smell.
The oven took a bit more of an effort, because it doesn’t get cleaned as much and has spills and grease splatters burnt on. But spraying on the oven and hob cleaner and leaving it for 5 or 10 minutes, it soon came off. It doesn’t get the oven as good as new, but what oven cleaner product really does? But it doesn’t look dirty or messy and no harsh chemicals are being used where I am going to cook my food!
Overall, Ecover’s Oven & Hob Cleaners is a great product, just as good as any chemical-based cleaning product and much better for the environment. It does a fantastic job of cleaning the cooker of dirt and grease with very little effort in a few minutes. The plant-based degreaser works wonders. And I love that there are no chemical fumes or odours.
With an RRP of £4.19 for a 500ml spray bottle that is very eco-friendly and has no harsh chemicals, it is excellent value for money, and it does the job very effectively. Perfect for everyday cleaning and should be a staple found in every cleaning cupboard.
