Straws

On the 1 October 2020 single use plastic drinking straws were banned from sale in the UK (along with other single use plastics such as stirrers and cotton buds). Whilst it was necessary to do so as single use plastics can take between 20 and 500 years or more to degrade (according to the UN website) and causes damage to the environment, the replacements aren’t so great.

Drinking a thick milkshake through a paper straw leaves a nasty taste in your mouth and the straws don’t hold up to it. Thankfully there are other options available with reusable straws. As these aren’t options when buying a milkshake or any other drinks, I keep a collapsible metal drinking straw in my bag.

There are lots of different types of reusable straws on the market: plastic, metal, bamboo and glass. I have been using a portable collapsible metal reusable drinking straw with case.

The Kynup Portable Collapsible Metal Reusable Drinking Straws with Case are a pack of four portable straws each in their own different coloured aluminium alloy case. The are metal telescopic straws with a silicone tip and are 11cm when collapsed and 23cm when fully extended. The straws have a 6mm diameter, making them a good size to drink from.

There are different colour options that you can purchase. Each straw is in its own individual carry case and comes with its own cleaning brush.

In the box (4 of each):

  • Telescopic Stainless Steel Straws
  • Metal Cases (all different colours)
  • Keychains
  • Silicone Mouthpieces
  • Cleaning Brushes
Straws

This pack of reusable metal straws come in a pack of four and have different colours, I bought mine in Black, Blue, Rose Gold and Silver but other colour packs are available.

Each straw comes in its own 11cm case that can be attached to a keyring or bag (comes with optional carabiner clip) and is small enough to keep in your bag. The case screws open to reveal a 3-part telescopic straw that is 11cm in its shortest collapsed length and can extended to 23cm at its fullest, perfect for most drinking vessels. The straw features a silicone tip so when using it you are not getting that cold metal taste.

When the straw is in the case, inside the straw is its own extendable cleaning brush. The case makes each straw extremely suitable for travelling and portability and the different colours means family members can have their own colour (or you could have different ones for different drinks).

Overall, I love these straws. They are far superior to using the paper straws that come with drinks as they are much more durable and don’t get soggy and hard to drink from. The silicone tip removes the cold metal taste and feeling.

The straws are easy to remove from their case by unscrewing the two pieces. The cleaning brush is stored within the straw so needs to be removed before use. As the straw ranges in length from 11cm to 23cm it is perfect for use with most drinks and the straw is very easy to extend and collapse. And as each straw comes with its own cleaning brush, the straws are very easy to keep clean.

As they are metal straws (food grade stainless steel) they are durable and long lasting. Although being metal, they are heat conductive and probably not the best for hot drinks (although the silicone tips make it safer to drink from).

As for drinking from them, the 6mm diameter (5.5mm internally) is a good size – even for thick milkshakes.

A great little straw to keep in your bag when out and about or travelling, no more soggy paper straws (and no waste going into the bin).
