Electricity is expensive these days, so having less lights on and remembering to turn them off when you are not using them is an excellent way to save money. Lighting takes up about 11% of our energy bills, so isn’t an insignificant chunk and can be a good saving over the year when switching to energy saving bulbs and switching them off when not in use. Switching to LED bulbs from incandescent or halogen bulbs can save about £7 per year per bulb, and switching lights off when you leave a room can save a household about £25 per year – it might not seem much but added together it can be a big saving and reduce your carbon footprint. But my hallway is quite dark so I do like a light on and have recently added a battery operated LED puck light with motion sensor that turns on when anyone enters the hallway. No more looking for the light switch or leaving the hall lights on and the light is only on when it needs to be on.
The puck light, so called because it is the size and shape of a hockey puck (about 8cm), is a small and lightweight battery operated light that sticks to the ceiling or wall using a magnetic disc. It is USB rechargeable and has a motion sensor so that it turns on when anyone comes into the room and turns itself off when motion is no longer detected after 25 seconds.
The puck light is perfect for hallways, corridors, stairs, closets, cabinets etc. I have some installed in my bookcases and my dark hallway.
Features:
- Easy Install in Seconds: no hammers, drills, or tools required. The LED lights provide 3 installation methods – directly attach to any ironwork surface with the built-in magnet. Use 3M adhesive tape to stick it wherever you want. Attach through the hanging hole.
- Built-in 400mAh USB Rechargeable Battery: no need to replace batteries anymore. It can be easily removed and recharged via a micro-USB cable when the light is dimmed. Fully charges in 2 hours.
- Long Working Hours: last up to 60+ days in AUTO mode. In ON mode, it can be used as emergency lighting to provide 5-6 hours of continuous light output.
- Excellent Motion Sensing: will light up once movement detected within 10ft and shut-off after about 25s if no more motion detected.
- Pure White LED Light: shine bright with a 60 lumens, 6000K Pure-white Light. This stick on puck light is perfect for illuminating every corner of your house. Excellent for under cabinet and accent lighting. The LEDs never need to be replaced.
These 8cm puck lights come with 3 in a pack. They each come with their own short microUSB cable so that you can plug them into a charger or even your laptop and they only take approx. 2 hours or so to charge. They can be used in an always on mode for under cabinet accent lighting, I have mine in my bookcases, or the can be used in auto mode so that they only come on when motion is detected. I have one in auto mode in my hallway (which is prefect for if I get up during the night and step out of the bedroom as then there is light in the hallway without having to go to the light switch).
Installation of these puck lights is simple. They have a built-in magnetic base so that you can attach them directly to a metal surface, they have a hanging hole if you wanted to put them on a nail or screw on the wall etc. but my favourite is that they come with a magnetic disc that you stick to the ceiling, under cabinet etc. using the strong 3M adhesive pad on it and then the light attaches to the magnetic (and is easily removed for charging).
Overall, I love these puck lights. They are very lightweight and are extremely easy to install and remove for charging, especially when using the magnetic discs. I have some in my bookcases that make them look cool in a not too bright but pure white light. I also have one set on auto in my hallway so that whenever someone steps out of a room the light will turn on and it is bright enough to light the hallway and see where you are going – it removes the need to leave the hallway lights on. The motion detection is perfect for kids and adults getting up during the night and lighting their way to the toilet without any harsh light hurting the eyes (or hunting for the light switch whilst half asleep).
If left in continuous mode they last about 5-6 hours before needing charging. In auto mode I charge about once a week, as it does get a lot of use in my dark hallway. They can also be switched off for when you don’t want to use them.
Charging is simple. The puck light easily detaches from the magnetic pad to be charged via USB, which takes about 2 hours. Each light comes supplied with their own cable so you can charge all at once if you have enough chargers or a multiple USB charger.
The light is good. Obviously, at only 60 lumens they are not as bright as an overhead bulb you would have in the hallway for example but they are bright enough to see what you are doing and where you are going so that you are not tripping over or bumping into things. Being a low light with LED bulbs, they are also extremely cheap to run.
Like I have said, I have one in the hallway and some on my bookcases, but they are also perfect for under cabinets in the kitchen, going up the stairs, inside cupboards and wherever else you would need a low light.
These are perfect for reducing the need to leave lights on all the time and cheap to run, They are also fantastic for your home safety measures as the light with automatically turn on when somebody approaches, hopefully preventing accidents in dark hallways and staircases.
I have been using 6 of these puck lights for a few months now and they haven’t failed to sense motion and turn on. They are fantastic little lights. I don’t get 60-90 days as advertised in AUTO mode. My main one is installed in a busy and dark hallway so gets a lot of use, I think I get about 2 weeks out of it but have got in the habit of charging it every Sunday so that I know it is always charged.
