Spring has sprung, the weather is starting to improve and it is getting warmer, the flowers are starting to bloom, the birds are chirping their morning song and the insects are starting to come out. And with the insects, unfortunately comes the bites and stings. Whilst insect bites and stings can be annoying, they can swell up and be itchy, you can use anti-histamine tablets and creams to alleviate the symptoms. But not everyone wants to use chemicals in or on their body. There are chemical/drug free remedies to help with those pesky bites and stings and I have been trying out the Beurer BR 90 Insect Bite Healer.
The Beurer BR 90 Insect Bite Healer is a chemical-free / drug-free small and portable electronic device that is suitable for treating and helping to heal insect bites and stings. The BR 90 Insect Bite Healer is a small handheld device (there is an even smaller travel version with carabiner hook, the BR 10), it looks like a large USB flash drive, measuring approx. 10.1 x 3.6 x 2.0cm. It weighs around 47g (including the batteries). It is a sleek, modern and uncomplicated looking device and is extremely easy to use which is perfect for keeping in your bag and use anywhere, day or night.
I first got this device last summer and got several chances to put it to the test.
The BR 90 Insect Bite Healer is a battery operated device which requires 2x AAA (these are supplied). When the batteries are installed and the device switched it on, a small blue LED light is displayed on the front of the device, indicating that it’s ready to use.
The device is very easy to use, it is small so is used one-handed. On the base of the device is a small white ceramic disc which is the heating plate that you put over the bite or sting. Locate the bite or sting, making sure any stinger is removed, and press the heating plate against it. On the front of the device there is a button which has two modes; press it once and you receive a 3 second burst of heat to the bite, press it twice in very quick succession for a 6 second application. Not knowing what to expect I tried it with the 3 second application so pressed the quite large button once. This resulted in two different things; the ring around the button was half illuminated and then an intense heat was applied to the bite wound. After the 3 seconds were up an audible beep sounded to indicate the three seconds were up.

I wouldn’t say that this is a pain-free treatment, it is a few seconds of intense heat. When the button on the device is pressed, the ceramic plate immediately heats up, it felt like it was burning my skin for the 3 seconds (although after checking, there was no visible mark, only the original bite mark). But did these few seconds of heat make any difference? Yes, it did! The heat application immediately soothed the itching and discomfort. There was immediate temporary relief from the itchiness. It isn’t a one fix treatment, you might need to use it a few times throughout the day, but after a couple of applications you forget that you have been bitten! And throughout the day, I did notice that there was visibly less swelling that I normally get and there wasn’t as much itching and scratching.
Whilst you experience a few seconds of intense heat from this small device, it does an excellent job of helping to relieve any itchiness and the constant need to scratch the itch, it also helps to accelerate healing and reduces any swelling.
Overall, this is a MUST HAVE device for anybody whose skin is an appealing, tasty feast for tiny insects and bugs. Nobody likes being bitten or stung, and when the inevitable does happen, this little device helps relieve the symptoms and accelerate the symptoms much better than I expected. It means that you get to enjoy the outdoors without worrying too much about bug bites and insect stings in the event that you do become a meal for any of nature’s flying / crawling friends.
The Beurer BR 90 Insect Bite Healer is very simple to use. Press it against the skin and push the large button. All you need to be able to do is stand the heat for 3 or 6 seconds. Although the heat is very intense and 3 seconds feels a very long time when using this device, for best results you do need to use for the full 3 or 6 seconds. When using it, you will want to remove the device before the treatment is finished as it can feel slightly painful – especially with the 6 second application, but the results are worth it. But as it is a direct application, it works much quicker that a pill or applying a cream to your skin.
When you press the button to activate the device and apply the heat, there is a blue LED ring that will illuminate halfway to indicate the 3 second application and fully illuminate when using the 6 second application. After use, the ceramic heating plate cools down in seconds so that you can safely put it back in your bag, pocket or medicine cabinet.
As bugs and insects don’t just visit during daylight hours, this small bite healer also features a light so that it can used just as well at night. The light can be switched on/off as required and means you can treat a bite during the night without having to wake anybody else by turning on room lights. The light also makes it perfect to locate and treat bites at night whilst camping for example.
The Beurer BR 90 Insect Bite Healer does have a limited lifespan, it can be used for up to 300 applications.
Whilst some people are excluded from using this chemical-free device (It shouldn’t be used by diabetics as in some circumstances pain sensitivity could be reduced resulting in possible burning), it can be used on children over 3 years old (under adult supervision) and for self-treatment by anyone suitable over 12 years old. It is also safe to be used during pregnancy.
There are also warnings not to use on scar tissue or skin sensitivity issues, after taking pain medication, drinking alcohol or taking drugs. The manual that is supplied with it (in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Turkish and Russian) covers when and who it can’t be used by – this can also be downloaded from the Beurer website if you want to check before buying.
If you are unlucky enough to become a snack for any bugs and insects, the Beurer BR 90 Insect Bite Healer is an excellent chemical and drug free device that works extremely well and quickly to relieve any bite pain and itchiness whilst at the same time helping to accelerate the healing process. For a few seconds of discomfort/pain whilst using it, the results are worth it.
I think this is an excellent little device to help treat bites and stings without having to apply any creams or take any antihistamines. It is the perfect size to keep in your bag or have in the medicine cabinet. As it offers instant relief from insect bites and stings it is a MUST HAVE device to help you enjoy the outdoors. And it can be used anywhere, anytime, day or night.
