Home decorating is more than just slapping a bit of fresh paint on the walls and woodwork; preparation is key! With no prep, your project will fail, look terrible or even see your paint flaking off the surfaces. So when I started redecorating at home I needed to sand down all the woodwork and a few walls. So I grabbed the sandpaper and off I went. Doing small bits of woodwork such as the skirtings and doorframes wasn’t too much of an issue but the bigger door surfaces and the walls (I need to take the shine off the old paintwork to give the new paint something to actually stick to) was hard work. So I needed something to speed it up and purchased a small electric sander, the Guild Detail Sander.
The Guild Detail Sander promises precision and power in a compact package. It is a 135w small, lightweight and affordable sander with built-in dust catcher, perfect for DIY around the home.
They say good things come in small packages, and the guild sander lives up to that.
In the box:
- 135w Corded Electric Sander
- Dust Box
- 2x 80 Grit Sanding Paper
- 2x 100 Grit Sanding Paper
- Manual
The Guild Detail Sander has 135w power output and is ideal for fine sanding and smoothing of smaller, more intricate, jobs around your house. I was using it for door frames, skirtings, dado rails and door surfaces and painted walls (just to remove the sheen of the paint rather than taking back to bare wood). It is a powerful pad sander with a maximum rotational speed of 12,000 RPM, this sander is a powerhouse in a petite package. Perfect for DIYers, crafters and hobbyists alike.
One of the standout features of the Guild Detail Sander is its user-friendly design. It comes supplied with a handy dust box that collects debris as you work, minimizing mess and allowing for a cleaner work environment, although it doesn’t collect everything so be prepared to still be cleaning us some dust. You can also attach a vacuum cleaner instead to collect the dust. This feature is not just about convenience; it’s also about health, as it reduces the amount of dust inhaled during sanding (you should also be using a dust mask).
It is very comfortable to use, boasting low vibration levels and a soft grip handle, ensuring comfort during prolonged use. This is crucial when you’re focusing on detailed work that requires precision and a steady hand. The front and rear handles provide better control, which is especially important when working on delicate surfaces.
Using the sander is very easy. The sanding sheets use a Velcro system so just press on and pull off, it makes changing sanding sheets for different finishes a breeze. Add the correct sanding paper for the job at hand (coarse for removing the most material, finer for a smoother finish – for most jobs you will probably use a combination of different sand paper for the best finish), attach the dust box or vacuum cleaner and off you go.
The soft grip front and rear handle make it easy to hold and manoeuvre, not too heavy to handle and when using, the vibrations from the electric motor and quite low.
Overall, the Guild Detail Sander is a small sander that packs a punch and is perfect for those small home DIY jobs and crafting. Its pointed tip makes it perfect for getting into corners, bevels and grooves on wood and metal surfaces, and is perfect for removing paint off the woodwork in your home and furniture ready for repainting.
The dust catcher is small and it fills up very fast. It also can spill when changing sanding angles, so it really isn’t to be relied on for bigger jobs and be prepared to clean up properly afterwards. You can attach a vacuum cleaner to suck up the dust instead which obviously doesn’t fill up as quickly and removes more dust.
It is a good little no frills sander and does a great job. Weighing in at approx. 1kg, it is not too heavy, doesn’t vibrate too much and it keeps a good grip on the sanding paper. The cable length is 2.5m – a good size for most jobs.
It is great for small home jobs and occasional use – it is not an everyday workhorse but for small sanding jobs and home decoration it has worked extremely well for me. And at £22, it’s a bargain, especially as it not a tool that I am going to use too often (but is still an excellent addition to the tool box). And it even comes with a 2 year guarantee.
