We all have a variety of keys for a multitude of uses. Keys to get into out homes. More keys to get into our cars. And even more keys for our cupboards, padlocks, cash boxes, safes etc. If we were to carry them all around with us they probably wouldn’t fit in our pockets or if they did would soon wear a hole in the pockets. And they would also be heavy and uncomfortable. Thankfully, most of us don’t carry around every key that we have. But that leaves us with the problem of where to keep them when they are not needed. Most us when we get home just throw our keys on the side, but whilst we are all guilty of doing this it really isn’t the safest option. Whilst we lock our doors, the letterbox is generally unsecured and thieves use this for letterbox burglaries or “fishing” with the aim to steal house or car keys. But help is at hand with a simple lockable key cabinet.
Our keys are very important and need protecting from loss and theft. We can’t always keep them on us. At home, you would think that they are safe but how many times have your run around the house looking for your keys because you have misplaced them? And then there is the unscrupulous act of “fishing” and letterbox burglary where thieves use sticks and hooks to poke through the letterbox looking for keys to open your door or steal your car.
- Never leave your keys near the front door in plain sight where they can be reached a lot easier than you might think.
- Protect your letterbox by adding nylon bristles / brush strip to prevent anyone peering through the letterbox. Plus they also make very good draught excluders, keeping the cold out and the warmth in.
- Install a letterbox restrictor so that you can restrict opening or fully lock the letterbox when needed, at night for example.
- Fit a letterbox cowl visor to stop anybody from peering through the letterbox.
- Install a lockable key safe or key cabinet where everybody can hang their keys. Not only are they secure from fishing tactics but by getting into the habit of putting your keys in it, you will always know where they are and not misplace them.
I recently purchased a Burg-Wächter Key Cabinet. It is a small sturdy steel construction wall-mounted cabinet for internal use that has 20 internal hooks for keys / sets of keys (if you require a key safe for external use always opt for a Police Preferred key safe). It uses a combination lock to keep the keys secure, no need for yet another key, just a three digit number to remember.
Features:
- 3-Dial combination lock key cabinet with resettable combination
- 20 Key Capacity with indexing system for easy key selection
- Strong steel construction with a Matt Black finish
- Complete with wall plug fixings & screws to secure the box
- 10 year guarantee
This small key cabinet is very easy to install. It is supplied with wall plug fixing and screws. The cabinet has 2 pre-drilled holes in the rear – mark the holes on the wall, drill holes and insert wall plugs and screw the cabinet to the wall.
With a combination used to secure the cabinet key against unauthorised entry, the combination can be set to any three digit number of your choosing and is very easy to do. On the inside of the door is a reset switch, flick it up, dial in your three digit number and flick the switch back down, Test it works before closing the door.
With the cabinet on the wall, everybody can securely put their keys away. They will always know where to find them and it will stop any fishing attacks.
Overall, the Burg-Wächter Key Cabinet is a small strong box to safely house your keys. It is easy to install and change combination. It also feels very well made and strong (although it won’t prevent a determined thief from busting the cabinet door open if they want the keys).
The cabinet, in a matt black finish, is fairly unobtrusive (and you could always have it in a cupboard) and it isn’t too big on the wall, measuring approximately 20(H) x 16(W) x 6cm(D).
Burg-Wächter’s Key Cabinet is an affordable way to manage and secure keys at home or at work, and is a good addition to any home security measures that you may already have in place.
It even comes supplied with numbered stickers for each hook that enables you to arrange, organise and keep track of keys.
Don’t leave your keys out in the open, even the relative safety of your own home – you don’t know what is coming through the letterbox. Put you keys away into the safety of a locked key cabinet.
