We all have DIY tasks at home that we always put off for another day, whether it’s putting up that shelf, assembling a new bookcase or painting the bathroom. Actually starting (and finishing) those DIY projects at home can be incredibly rewarding. Not only do you get to personalise your home, but you also gain a sense of accomplishment from completing those small tasks yourself. However, to tackle any DIY jobs effectively, you need the right tools in your toolkit. Whether you’re a seasoned DIY enthusiast or just starting out, having these essential tools will make your projects smoother and more efficient.

Everybody should have the basics in their toolbox:

  • Hammer: A hammer is a fundamental tool for any home DIYer. It’s used for driving nails into wood, removing nails, and even for small demolition tasks. Opt for a claw hammer, which has a curved claw on one side for pulling nails out. It will aid you in a variety of tasks including putting up pictures and assembling flatpack furniture.
  • Screwdrivers: A screwdriver set is indispensable. Needed for assembling furniture, tightening screws, removing battery covers from childrens toys and various other tasks. Make sure to have both flathead and Phillips head screwdrivers in different sizes to cover a range of screw types and jobs.
  • Tape Measure: Accurate measurements are crucial for any DIY projects. A tape measure ensures that you cut materials to the right size, helps you plan layouts accurately and work out if that new bookcase you want will fit in the gap that you have in mind. Look for a sturdy, retractable tape measure that’s at least 10 feet long (3 metres), although 25ft would be better.
  • Utility Knife: A utility knife is perfect for cutting materials like cardboard and carpet. It’s also handy for opening all those Amazon packages that turn up at your door and for trimming excess material. Choose a knife with a comfortable grip and replaceable blades.
  • Pliers: Pliers come in various types, each serving different purposes. Needle-nose pliers are great for gripping small objects and bending wires, while slip-joint pliers are versatile for gripping and turning. Having a few types in your toolkit will cover a range of tasks.
  • Adjustable Wrench: An adjustable wrench is essential for tightening and loosening nuts and bolts of various sizes. It’s a versatile tool that can be adjusted to fit different fasteners, making it a must-have for plumbing and mechanical tasks.
  • Spirit Level: A spirit level ensures that your projects are perfectly horizontal or vertical. Whether you’re hanging pictures, installing shelves, or building furniture, a spirit level helps you achieve a professional finish, no one wants a shelf that’s on the slant! A small, torpedo level is handy for most tasks, for straight measurements consider a ruler type with handle.
  • Hex Keys: A set of hex (or Allen) keys are used for driving bolts and screws with hexagonal sockets into their heads. Building flatpack furniture? The most common size is 4mm for Ikea, either a L- or S-shaped hex key – I find the S-shaped keys more comfortable, quicker and easier to use.
  • Safety Gear: Safety should always be a priority when working on DIY projects. Every toolbox should be equipped with safety goggles to protect your eyes, ear defenders for loud tasks, and work gloves to shield your hands from cuts and abrasions.
  • Tool Box: And of course, you’ll need a sturdy tool box to keep all your tools organised and easily accessible. Look for one with compartments and trays to keep smaller items like screws and nails sorted.

Depending on what home DIY tasks you attempt, you might also need a power drill, a saw of some type and a selection of nails and screws. It’s also handy to keep a pencil, ruler and tape (masking tape and electrical tape) in your toolbox as well as rawl and plasterboard plugs (aka wall plugs / anchors). And don’t forget to have a good sturdy stepladder in the cupboard.

Having the right tools in your toolkit is essential for tackling home DIY projects, whether it’s putting up a shelf or a picture or assembling furniture. The right tools will help you work more efficiently, safely, and with greater precision. Make sure that you stock your toolkit with these essentials, and get ready to take on your next home improvement project with confidence!
